Asthma
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder in which the airways become inflamed and narrowed, causing breathing difficulties that can range from mild to life-threatening. People with asthma have an increased sensitivity to triggers such as dust mites, pollen, animal dander, mould, and smoke. Symptoms of asthma include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Treatment for asthma usually focuses on controlling triggers, avoiding allergens, and managing symptoms with medications, including short-acting bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, and leukotriene modifiers. Early prevention and recognition of asthma symptoms are important in order to reduce the physical and emotional complications of the condition.
