Mastitis
Mastitis is a bacterial infection of the mammary glands of female mammals, most commonly seen in dairy cows. It is characterized by inflammation and pain in the mammary glands, as well as excessive milk production, high somatic cell count, and changes in milk composition. Mastitis causes significant economic losses to the dairy industry due to reduced milk production, the need for treatment and culling of affected cows, and decreased milk quality. Early diagnosis and treatment of mastitis is essential to prevent the development of chronic forms of the disease and limit economic losses. Treatment modalities include antibiotics, hygienic milking, mastitis vaccines, and udder massage. Proper management of dairy cows is also essential to reduce the risk of mastitis.
