Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a serious and progressive liver disease caused by the buildup of fat in the liver. It has similar symptoms to those caused by alcohol abuse, but it is different because it occurs in people who do not drink alcohol and the onset of the disease can be silent, presenting no early symptoms. NASH can lead to cirrhosis, which can ultimately cause liver failure. Early diagnosis and treatment is important to prevent progression of the disease. Risk factors include obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Treatments for NASH include lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and regular exercise, and medications to help reduce inflammation and fat in the liver.
