How the board works

Who decides, on what basis, and what happens when someone is too close to a manuscript.

  • Assessment

    What the board judges

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Reviewers advise; the decision rests with the editors.

  • Independence

    Decisions are independent of payment

An article processing charge is payable only after acceptance, and neither payment nor an author’s ability to pay has any part in the assessment or the decision that produced it. Editorial decisions are equally independent of membership, of any service the publisher offers, and of any role a person holds with the journal.

  • Conflicts

    Recusal, not disclosure alone

An editor or reviewer with an interest in a submission — an institutional, financial, commercial or personal relationship that a reasonable reader would want to know about — is recused from handling it and the manuscript is reassigned. This applies to submissions from an editor’s own institution or research group as much as to commercially sponsored work.

  • Editor-authored work

An editor does not handle their own manuscript

A manuscript submitted by a member of the board is handled independently of its author. The editor concerned takes no part in the choice of reviewers, has no access to the review file, and takes no part in the decision.

  • Confidentiality

A manuscript under review is confidential

Editors and reviewers treat a submitted manuscript as confidential, do not share it outside the review, and do not use unpublished material. Reviewer obligations, including the rules on artificial-intelligence assistance, are set out in the reviewer guidelines.

Joining the board

The journal is building its board across the whole of its scope.

Researchers and clinicians working anywhere across the journal’s aims and scope — assessment, prevention, treatment in any of its five modalities, long-term management, and the metabolic consequences of obesity — are invited to put themselves forward for the editorial board or the reviewer pool. Write to the editorial office at [email protected] with a current institutional affiliation, an ORCID iD, and the areas of the scope you would be willing to handle.
