Journal of Antioxidant Activity

JAA publishes research on antioxidant activity, oxidative stress, redox mechanisms and antioxidant defense, including chemical, computational, biological, food, nutritional, pharmacological and clinical research.

A substantive antioxidant or redox question defines fit. Methods and conclusions must suit the study design; a new laboratory assay is not required for every article.

What the journal publishes

A substantive antioxidant or redox question connects the journal's research domains. Evidence may be chemical or analytical, computational, cellular or biochemical, animal or preclinical, human or clinical, and population or observational.

Antioxidant chemistry and measurement

Natural and synthetic antioxidants, reaction kinetics, structure–activity relationships, assay development, calibration and justified comparison of measurements.

Natural products and phytochemistry

Solvent series and pH effects, matrix and plant-part selection, total phenolic and total flavonoid content, isolation and characterization of active constituents.

Redox biology and oxidative stress

Oxidative stress in cells, tissues and whole organisms; mitochondrial and membrane systems; enzymatic and non-enzymatic defense; redox signaling; markers of oxidative damage and repair.

Food and nutritional antioxidants

Food chemistry, processing and storage, dietary exposure, supplementation, absorption and metabolism, including intervention and observational studies with a substantive redox question.

Pharmacology and biomedical research

Antioxidant candidates, drug-related oxidative effects, toxicology and redox interventions; preclinical and clinical studies of efficacy and safety with proportionate conclusions.

Computational and evidence-synthesis research

Computational models with appropriate validation and uncertainty; critical reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses addressing a defined antioxidant or redox question.

How the journal reads an activity value

A measured antioxidant activity is a property of a compound, extract or system under stated conditions. It is not, on its own, evidence of a health effect. Manuscripts that move from an assay result to a physiological, nutritional or clinical claim are expected to carry the study design that supports that step, and to keep the two statements distinct.

What a manuscript needs to report

Reporting follows the study design. Experimental studies describe measurements and controls; computational studies describe models and validation; clinical and population studies describe participants, outcomes and analysis. Reviews and protocols have distinct reporting needs.

Question and design

State the antioxidant or redox question, study design and contribution. Distinguish completed research, evidence synthesis and a planned study protocol.

Methods and evidence

Describe the relevant measurements, models, participants or source literature and the analysis needed to evaluate and reproduce the work.

Limits and transparency

Report appropriate controls or validation, uncertainty, limitations, data availability and applicable ethics. Keep predictions, associations and established effects distinct.

For laboratory activity studies, report the assay, endpoint, material, reference standards and controls; explain differences between assays. Computational predictions must remain distinct from experimentally established effects. Reporting guidance and article formats are in the Instructions for Authors and the Editorial Policies.
