A special issue gathers work on one question into a collection that is read together. Enzymes runs them on proposal from researchers in the field.

Propose a Special Issue
Enzymes welcomes proposals for focused collections that address important questions in enzyme science. Researchers with relevant expertise are invited to review the proposal requirements and contact the editorial office.
A proposal is strongest when it names a question the field is actively arguing about, explains why a collection serves it better than separate papers would, and identifies the community likely to contribute. Say what you would cover, who you are, and what you have published in the area.

Governance and independence
A special issue is a way of grouping work, not a different standard for it. These safeguards are what make a collection worth contributing to.

The same assessment
A manuscript submitted to a collection is screened and reviewed as any other manuscript is. All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

The same decision criteria
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Belonging to a collection is not among them, and a collection is never filled to reach a target number of papers.

Guest editors
A guest editor is appointed for subject expertise, is named on the collection, and handles manuscripts under the journal's own policies. A guest editor's own submission to their collection is handled by another editor, independently.

Conflicts
A guest editor declines any manuscript where they have a competing interest, and the editorial office reassigns it. The rules are the ones in For Editors.

Charges
Articles in a collection carry the journal's ordinary article processing charge, invoiced after acceptance, as set out on Article Processing Charges.

Thematic exchange
Publishing alongside related work puts a paper in front of readers following that question. What they do with it is theirs to decide.

Regular submissions
Regular submissions are accepted throughout the year, across the whole of the journal's remit. A collection is one route into the journal, never the only one.
