Fractures of the Humeral Condyles in Children – A Review

Abstract:

The three most common elbow fractures classically reported in pediatric orthopedic literature are supracondylar (50–70%), lateral condylar (17–34%), and medial epicondylar fractures (10%).

The mechanism of injury varies, but the most commonly described mechanism involves a fall on an outstretched hand with varus, valgus or rotational force or a combination thereof. The vectors of force and the degree of chondro-osseous development dictate the type of injury incurred.

Molecular Spectroscopy and Molecular Docking Studies on (E)-1-(4-Bromobenzylidene) Thiourea

Abstract:

The organic molecule (E)-1-(4-bromobenzylidene)thiourea (BBTU) have been synthesized and characterized using FT-IR and FT-Raman spectral studies. The quantum chemical calculations of BBTU have been studied using DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The stable conformer is identified by the potential energy surface scan. The complete vibrational assignments were performed on the basis of PED analysis with the help of SQM method. NBO analysis was carried out to explore the various conjucative/hyperconjucative interactions within the molecule and their second order stabilization energy. The NLO activity of BBTU is calculated and compared with the standard Urea molecule. The energies of the FMOs are used for the determination of global reactivity descriptors. Impacts of Cassava Mill Effluents in Nigeria

Abstract:

Cassava is the fourth largest staple food after rice, wheat and maize. Cassava is produced in the tropical and sub-tropical countries. Currently, the global production of cassava is about 215,436,496 tons. Out of these, Nigeria accounts for 20.3%, being the largest producing nation. During processing of cassava flour (Gari), three main wastes are generated including cassava mill effluents (CME), solid and gaseous emission. This paper reviews the impacts of CME in Nigeria. The study found that CME’s physicochemical quality often exceeds the limit for effluents discharge onto land and surface water as recommended by Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA), Nigeria. CME alters the quality of soil and water with regard to physicochemical, heavy metal and microbial characteristics. The Duration of the Alcohol Hangover

Abstract:

Introduction and aims

Previous research has focused primarily on the severity of the alcohol hangover. Much less is known about the duration of the alcohol hangover. The objective of this analysis was to examine the average duration of the alcohol hangover.

Design and Methods

N=811 Dutch students, aged 18-30 years old, completed a survey on alcohol consumption and their latest alcohol hangover. Overall hangover severity was reported for every two hours after waking up (starting 4am until midnight). Hangover duration was calculated from the moment of stopping alcohol consumption until the first time hangover severity scores reached zero.

β-Cell function in type 1 diabetes may not be as low as presumed

Objective

We aimed to evaluate β-cell function of type 1 diabetic patients (T1DP)s based on fasting and stimulated C-peptide levels.

Material and methods

Study included 135 T1DPs and 31 healthy subjects. Fasting C-peptide levels were measured in healthy subjects and T1DPs. The Mixed-meal tolerance test (MMTT) was performed in T1DPs. Fasting and stimulated (90 minute post MMTT) C-peptide levels were measured via electrochemiluminescence assay. Perception Threshold Variations of Pain Area with Herpetic Ophthalmic Neuralgia

Abstract:

Background:

To measure the affected subepidermal nerve sensation with a combination of current perception threshold (CPT) and Semmes-Weinstein monofilament (SWM) testing under pain areas with herpetic ophthalmic neuralgia (HON).

Methods:

One hundred fifty-five subjects with HON and 30 age-matched volunteers were recruited for the study.

Results:

The combined SWM and CPT testing yielded significantly abnormal responses at the painful sites for the patients with HON compared to those responses of the normal controls (p< 0.05).
