Ontogenes and the Problem of Speciation
Abstract:
The existing hypotheses on speciation rely on Mendelian genes and mutations in them. However, genome-wide sequencing demonstrates that the Mendelian genes account less than one-tenth of the entire genome DNA. This means that a greater part of the genome has not yet been subject to large-scale evolutionary consideration. This paper deals with the conditional mutations in drosophila, which are mutations of the genes belonging to a special category (ontogenes) controlling the program of individual development. The ontogenes presumably reside in the DNA of intergenic spaces and introns. Conditional mutations display a number of properties absent in the mutations of Mendelian genes. These specific properties allow three key problems in speciation to be solved: (1) the possibility of emergence of new traits as a result of sequential mutagenesis; (2) selection of mutants; and (3) establishment of isolation. Controversy exists about definition of agitation and especially about inclusion of aggression as a part of agitation in people with dementia. Papers describing neurobiological indices related to behavioral symptoms of dementia were reviewed. Papers comparing indices in persons exhibiting aggression and persons exhibiting agitation were selected for this review. The survey found seven papers which compared neuroanatomical indices and three papers which compared neurochemical indices. Chest wall deformities may be managed with skeletal manipulation, which risks life-threatening complications. Custom-made prostheses are a less invasive surgical option, manufactured from silicone elastomer using 3D computed tomographic reconstruction and 3D-printed thoracic models. All patients undergoing custom-made implants between January 2010 and March 2017 were identified from the prosthetic department records. A retrospective review of the clinical records was performed. Melanoma of the Breast with Smoothened (SMO) Mutation: Case Report and review of the Literature
Abstract:
We report the case of a 75 year-old female with past history of ampullary adenocarcinoma presenting with a rapidly enlarging breast mass, initially misclassified on fine needle aspiration as a probable sarcoma, which was ultimately diagnosed as melanoma on resection in the absence of a known cutaneous primary lesion. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the tumor revealed a mutation in the Smoothened oncogene (SMO) of unknown significance and wild-type BRAF. To our knowledge, SMO mutation in melanoma of any site has not been previously reported, though the effectiveness of SMO inhibitors has been studied in both in vivo and in vitro models of melanoma. Currently, these inhibitors have not been studied in SMO mutant melanoma. The patient declined further therapy after resection due to multiple comorbidities. She expired two years after presenting with the breast mass from complications of high grade urothelial carcinoma.
A Rare Variant of the Stafne Bone Cavity Localized to the Subcondylar Region of the Mandible: A Case Report with Review of the Literature
Abstract:
An anatomical variant of the Stafne bone cavity (SBC) located in the right subcondylar region of the mandible is presented. Such an occurrence of the SBC in this region near the parotid gland is considered rare and poses a diagnostic challenge for the dentist and radiologist. Knowledge of head and neck clinical anatomy and imaging studies such as plain film panoramic radiographs and cone beam CT scans can assist the clinician in arriving at a correct definitive diagnosis without surgical intervention.

Image guided ablations might be regarded as a promising effective and safe alternative for treatment of recurrent thyroid cancer in particular in patients with high surgical risk or refusing surgery. Furthermore, image guided ablations seems to represent a promising alternative to surgery or observation for micropapillary thyroid carcinoma, with the aim of providing an effective treatment with minimal invasiveness.
