Instructions for Authors
A working guide to preparing a manuscript for this journal: what to check before you start, what the manuscript itself must contain, what has to be declared, and how to submit it.

Preparing a submission
Four things to settle first
One · Fit
Read the Aims & Scope and satisfy yourself that inflammation is scientifically central to your study rather than incidental to it. The editorial office will advise on fit before submission if you are unsure.
Two · Ethics approvals
Have the approvals in hand before you write the manuscript. Human studies require institutional review board approval and documented informed consent; animal research requires ethical committee approval. Interventional clinical trials require prospective registration.
Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
Three · Reporting standard
Identify the reporting guideline that applies to your study design and prepare the manuscript against it. State in the methods which guideline you followed.
Four · Data and materials
Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. Say where the data are, and where access is restricted, say on what terms it can be requested.
The manuscript
What the file has to contain
Structure
A title, an abstract, the body of the work, and a reference list. Empirical work is expected to make its design, materials and analysis explicit enough for a reader in a neighboring field to follow and for a specialist to reproduce.
Methods
Identify reagents, cell lines, antibodies and software precisely enough to be obtained again. Distinguish biological from technical replicates, and state the statistical approach with the analysis it was applied to.
Figures
Supply images at a resolution that survives print. Describe any processing applied to an image in the legend, and apply it to the whole image rather than to a region of it.
Claims
Keep conclusions proportionate to the design that produced them. Preclinical work is reported as preclinical, and limits are stated rather than left to the reader.
For double-blind review
For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.
At submission

Declare
- Ethics approval and consent, with the approving body named
- Competing interests for every author
- Funding, with grant identifiers where they exist
- Author contributions, and agreement to submission by all authors
- The data-availability statement
- Trial registry, number and date, for interventional trials
Review
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
After acceptance
Articles are published open access under CC BY 4.0, and authors retain copyright. The article processing charge is invoiced only after acceptance; the terms are on the Article Processing Charges page.
Withdrawal
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere. Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
