Editorial Policies
These are the rules the journal applies to every manuscript: how submissions are screened and reviewed, how decisions are reached and recorded, what is required of research involving people and animals, and how concerns about the published record are handled.
Review and decisions
How a manuscript is handled
Screening
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
Review model
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Reviewers are selected for subject expertise and independence from the work under assessment.
Decisions
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
Editorial decisions remain independent of fees, memberships, roles and paid services.
Decisions are recorded with the reasoning that produced them, so that handling stays consistent between manuscripts and across revision rounds.
Conflicts of interest
Editors and reviewers declare interests that could affect their judgment and step aside from manuscripts where impartiality could reasonably be questioned. Authors disclose competing interests at submission.
Editors who submit to the journal take no part in the assessment of their own work; those manuscripts are handled independently.
Research ethics
What the journal requires of the research
Human participants
Studies involving human participants require institutional review board approval and documented informed consent. Identifiable patient material requires consent for publication.
Animal research
Animal research requires ethical committee approval, and the manuscript must report the approving body and the conditions under which the work was carried out.
Clinical trials
Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
Data availability
Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
Reporting
Authors follow the reporting guideline that applies to their study design and state which one they have used.
The published record
Integrity, correction and rights
Authorship
Everyone listed as an author is accountable for the work, and everyone who qualifies is listed. Changes to authorship after submission require the agreement of all authors.
Concerns
Concerns about data integrity, originality or conduct are examined by the editors before any conclusion is reached, and the authors are given the opportunity to respond.
Corrections
Where a published article requires correction or retraction, the journal issues a signed notice that remains linked to the original record. Published articles are not removed or silently altered.
Rights
Articles are published open access under CC BY 4.0. Authors retain copyright and grant the right to reuse the work with attribution.
