Disease Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term for any type of ailment that affects the heart or blood vessels. Examples of diseases that can be classified as CVD include coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure and congenital heart disease. CVD is a major cause of death and disability in countries around the world and significantly impacts economic development. To prevent CVD, individuals and health authorities must focus on health promotion, risk factor management and early detection. For example, healthy lifestyle and dietary modifications, cessation of smoking, physical activity and adequate blood pressure control can reduce the risk of CVD. In addition, screening and detection of risk factors can enable early intervention with effective treatments and improved outcomes.
