Antioxidants in Liver Health
Antioxidants are molecules that can protect the body from the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are formed naturally by the body’s metabolic processes, or when exposed to environmental toxins and stress. In the liver, free radicals can lead to inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and other diseases. Antioxidants, like vitamin E, selenium and glutathione, can prevent or reduce the oxidative damage caused by free radicals, and thus protect liver health. Antioxidants are found in certain foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and certain nuts and seeds, and can also be taken as dietary supplements. Taking antioxidants is important for maintaining liver health, as well as overall health.
