Overview

Antioxidants and skin health concerns how compounds that counter oxidative stress protect cutaneous tissue from damage and contribute to its structure and function. The skin is continually exposed to ultraviolet radiation, pollution, and other environmental stressors that generate reactive oxygen species, driving lipid peroxidation, protein and DNA damage, degradation of collagen and elastin, and the inflammatory cascades associated with photoaging and barrier impairment. Antioxidant defenses in this context include endogenous enzymatic systems such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, together with dietary and topical compounds including vitamins C and E, carotenoids, and plant-derived polyphenols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Research examines how these molecules quench free radicals, support extracellular-matrix integrity, and modulate redox-sensitive signaling involved in inflammation and pigmentation. Investigators frequently characterize candidate agents using radical-scavenging assays, total phenolic content, and total antioxidant capacity, screening botanical extracts for activity relevant to dermatological application and formulation. Significant questions include the bioavailability and stability of antioxidants delivered orally versus topically, their penetration into viable skin layers, and the extent to which in vitro antioxidant potency translates into measurable protection against ultraviolet-induced and age-related cutaneous changes, making this an actively investigated intersection of redox biology and skin science.
