Overview
Antioxidants are molecules that help protect the body from harmful molecules called free radicals. They play an important role in maintaining overall health, particularly in protecting the eyes. Oxidative stress, caused by a buildup of free radicals, can lead to vision problems such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma. Antioxidants are believed to reduce this oxidative stress in the eyes, helping to keep the eyes healthy. Sources of antioxidants include fruits and vegetables, nuts and whole grains, and supplements such as vitamins A, C, and E. Antioxidants also help reduce inflammation, which can be a contributing factor to various eye diseases.
