Antioxidant Enzymes and Their Functions
Antioxidant enzymes are proteins found in the cells of all living organisms, and are essential for preventing damage from oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down harmful byproducts of metabolism and environmental stressors, such as free radicals and reactive oxygen species. They are also important components of the body’s natural defense mechanisms against disease and aging. Antioxidant enzymes have many uses in health and disease prevention, including protecting against cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, they are also used in food and cosmetic preservation, and can be used to improve the quality and shelf-life of products.
