Can Vitamin D Mitigate Osteoarthritic Hip Joint Arthroplasty Infections Among Older Adults? A Narrative Overview of the Literature Amidst COVID-19 Lockdowns and Beyond

Abstract:

Background

Older adults with hip joint osteoarthritis, a major cause of chronic progressively disabling highly painful functional experiences, may require a surgical joint replacement procedure known as total joint arthroplasty surgery.

Objective

This review aimed to address the question of whether there an association between hip joint arthroplasty infection rates and prevailing pre or preoperative vitamin D levels that warrants consideration in efforts to prevent or minimize infection related hip arthroplasty complications among older adults particularly during the current ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

PUBMED, SCOPUS, and WEB OF SCIENCE articles related to the topic and published between January 2016-2021 were searched...

A Summary of Circular RNAs in Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract:

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are recently rediscovered eukaryotic molecules that form a covalently closed-loop structure through a special type of alternative splicing known as backsplicing. These closed-loop structures are highly stable and resistant to RNase degradation, and are thereby expressed in a tissue-specific and evolutionarily conserved manner, which regulates the expression of proteins and mRNAs that are involved in the metabolic pathways associated with specific diseases. Recent evidence of the ubiquitous expression of circRNAs in cancer under physiological and pathophysiological conditions indicates that dysregulation of gene and protein expression might promote tumorigenesis and carcinogenesis, and that circRNAs have important clinical significance in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of cancer and other diseases. This review provides a brief introduction to the characteristics, formation, and function of circRNAs. Some of circRNAs act as microRNA...

Delayed Laparoscopic Repair of Bladder Injury with Vesico Cutaneous Fistula in Fracture Pelvis

Abstract:

Small extra-peritoneal bladder injury is commonly treated conservatively as it heals spontaneously. However if there is an impinging bony spicule in the rent, the bladder wound does not heal and it is preferable to repair the rent primarily. We present a case of non healing extra-peritoneal bladder injury initially managed conservatively in a trauma center with supra-pubic catheter (SPC). Cystogram was done after 7 weeks showed persistent leakage of contrast. Hence patient was managed by laparoscopic repair of persistent extra-peritoneal bladder rent.

Socio Economic Profile and Nutritional Status of the Rickshaw Pullers of Dhaka City Along with their Energy Intake Gap

Abstract:

Background

This study focused on nutritional status of the rickshaw pullers, their dietary energy and nutrients consumption along with their energy intake gap as compared to expenditure.

Methods

A cross sectional study was carried out at 15 different important locations of Dhaka city during December-January 2018. In total, 670 rickshaw pullers from these locations were randomly selected. Printed predesigned and validated semi structured questionnaire was used to record necessary information. Nutritional status was determined according to Asia specific BMI cut- off values. Energy expenditure was calculated using their Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Physical Activity Level (PAL) value. 24-hour dietary recall method was administered for dietary analysis.

Effect of COVID 19 Pandemic on Stroke Care and Admission - Single Centre Study

Abstract:

Background

By the start of year 2020, the whole world was attacked by a rapidly spreading epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) which later was classified by WHO as Pandemic. some physicians reported multiple neurological manifestations including cerebrovascular strokes in patients with severe infection.

Aim

to assess the incidence of admitted stroke cases during 2019 in comparison to 2020 during COVID-19 pandemic in King Fahd Hospital, Saudi Arabia.

Methodology

A record based retrospective comparative study was conducted by reviewing all medical records for patients who admitted with stroke at King Fahd Hospital during March and April 2019 and March...

Vineyard Clusters Monitored by Means of Litterbag-NIRS and Foliar-NIRS Spectroscopic Methods

Abstract:

There is currently a lack of rapid indirect analysis methods for the assessment of the effects of soil microbiota on vine production. Fifteen clusters of two Nebbiolo and Erbaluce varieties were identified in five vineyards belonging to a cooperative of winemakers in North West Italy, according to the differences in the NDVI index, as monitored by the Crop Monitoring OES system. The vineyards were surveyed in 2019 and the experimental monitoring of 75 vines was conducted in 2020. The first indirect method (Litterbag-NIRS) involved examining hay litterbags with a smart SCiOTM device. The average litterbag-NIR spectra of the clusters, as far as the yield is concerned, were closely fitted with the measured production yield, with an R2 cross-validated value of 0.91 in the Nebbiolo vines and 0.67 in the Erbaluce vines. The results in yield were accounted for by considering a few ...

Models and data Analysis of the Outbreak Risk of COVID-19

Abstract:

With the spread of the new coronavirus around the world, governments of various countries have begun to use the mathematical modeling method to construct some virus transmission models assessing the risks of spatial spread of the new coronavirus COVID-19, while carrying out epidemic prevention work, and then calculate the inflection point for better prevention and control of epidemic transmission. This work analyzes the spread of the new coronavirus in China, Italy, Germany, Spain, and France, and explores the quantitative relationship between the growth rate of the number of new coronavirus infections and time. In investigating the dynamics of a disease such as COVID-19, its mathematical representation can be constructed at many levels of details, guided by the questions the model tries to help answer. Mathematical sophistication may have to yield to a more pragmatic approach closer to the ability to make predictions that inform public health po...

The Vascular Swirls- Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma

Abstract:

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH)  is an exceptional, soft tissue neoplasm of indeterminate lineage and intermediate malignancy associated with minimal localized tumour reoccurrence and infrequent distant metastasis. Preliminarily contemplated to be a variant or  derivative of malignant fibrous histiocytoma or undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma or an unusual fibrohistiocytic sarcoma,  angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma predominantly incriminates young po pulation and superficial sites although several extra-somatic sites can be implicated.

Osteoarthritis, COVID-19 Social Isolation-Impacts, and Counter Solutions

Abstract:

Background to the Issue

Many older adults, including those already suffering from chronically painful disabling osteoarthritis of one or more joints remain more susceptible than healthy age and gender matched adults to the COVID-19 corona virus.

Aims

This report sought to examine what has been published in 2020 on this health condition from the perspective of the variable of widely imposed social isolation strategies designed to mitigate the spread of this highly infectious disease, and to especially keep older community dwelling adults ‘safe’ from infection.

Methods

Reviewed were all articles published in 2020 in PUBMED from January 1-December 24, 2020 on osteoarthritis and COVID-19 isolation impacts, plus relevant past o...
