Overview
Shrews are small mammals belonging to the family Soricidae. They are found in diverse habitats all over the world and can be recognized by their long pointed snouts, small round ears and long tails. Shrews are important for their role in controlling pest and disease-causing insect populations, as well as for their role in soil aeration and nutrient cycling. They are also of great importance for research in the fields of ecology and evolution, as they are often used as model organisms for understanding the dynamics of species interactions and community ecology. The populations of some species of shrews are also declining due to habitat loss and climate change, making their conservation an important priority.
