Overview

Women's health issues refer to the range of medical and health conditions that particularly affect women, many of them connected to the female reproductive system and the physiological changes women experience across their lives. The reproductive system is responsible for functions such as the menstrual cycle, fertility, childbirth, and menopause, and conditions affecting it can have wide-ranging effects on health and well-being. Addressing these issues calls for comprehensive health care, information, and education so that women can maintain healthy reproductive function and overall health through different life stages. Research relevant to women's health issues includes studies of menopausal symptoms and their effects on women's daily functioning and occupational needs, the knowledge and practice of preconception care among women of reproductive age, the circumstances of women seeking induced abortion in low-resource settings, and barriers to comprehensive health care for women affected by sexual violence and for underserved groups. These studies examine the health conditions, social determinants, and access barriers that shape women's health across the life course.
