Overview

Women's reproductive health is the state of physical, mental, and social well-being relating to the female reproductive system and its functions across the life course, from menarche through the reproductive years to menopause. It spans the anatomy and physiology of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, and associated structures, and the clinical and social domains of menstruation, contraception, fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, sexually transmitted infection, and gynaecological disease. Reproductive health is governed by the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and is strongly conditioned by nutrition, education, equity of access to services, and the legal and cultural environment in which care is sought. Peer-reviewed research in this field addresses preconception care, perimenopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome, adolescent sexual and reproductive knowledge and rights, barriers to care among marginalized groups including lesbian and bisexual women and sex workers, teenage pregnancy, and the medical management of sexual assault survivors. The literature draws on cross-sectional surveys, qualitative studies, and clinical investigations across a wide range of populations and settings, with particular attention to underserved communities. Collectively it frames reproductive health as the product of biological, behavioural, and structural determinants, and the journal publishes scholarship spanning these clinical, behavioural, and public-health dimensions of women's reproductive health.
