Overview
Vaginal infections are conditions caused by an imbalance or overgrowth of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast, or other pathogens, in the vagina, often disrupting the normal vaginal flora. Common types include bacterial vaginosis, vaginal yeast infections (candidiasis), and trichomoniasis, and symptoms may include abnormal discharge, itching, irritation, odor, and discomfort. While many vaginal infections are common and treatable, untreated or recurrent infections can cause significant discomfort and, in some cases, contribute to complications affecting reproductive health. They are an important aspect of Women's Reproductive Health, and prevention and prompt treatment rely on good hygiene, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate care. Research published by the journal in Women's Reproductive Health relevant to vaginal and vulvar infection includes a study of vulvovaginitis as a risk factor for the degree of labial adhesions in prepubertal girls with labial fusion, examining how vaginal and vulvar inflammation can contribute to a related gynecological condition. Such work illustrates the clinical importance of recognizing and managing vaginal and vulvar infections across different age groups. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to vaginal infections and Women's Reproductive Health.
