Overview

Preconception care refers to the range of activities women and couples carry out before conception takes place to optimize their reproductive health. It is a proactive approach to ensure the mother and the baby’s well-being during pregnancy, birth, and after birth. Women who are planning to get pregnant should take preconception care to prevent complications and ensure a healthy and safe pregnancy. Preconception care involves several aspects such as a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, proper nutrition, stress management, and avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking and alcohol consumption. It is essential to take adequate folic acid and multivitamin supplements before conception to reduce the risk of birth defects. Women and couples should also ensure that they are up to date with their immunizations before conception. Many diseases can cause complications during pregnancy, such as rubella, hepatitis, and chickenpox. Immunizations can protect both the mother and the baby from these diseases. Regular physical exams and screening tests are also important before conception. Women should get a Pap smear and other tests to detect sexually transmitted diseases, thyroid disease, and other illnesses which can negatively impact pregnancy. In a nutshell, preconception care is critical to ensure a healthy and safe pregnancy. It helps to detect and treat any underlying medical conditions and reduce the risk of complications. By taking care of their health before conception, women and couples can optimize their chances of having a healthy baby.
