Overview

Maternal-fetal medicine is the obstetric subspecialty devoted to the management of high-risk pregnancy and the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the mother, the fetus, and the placenta. It integrates advanced antenatal surveillance, prenatal diagnosis, and, where indicated, fetal intervention to optimize outcomes when pregnancy is complicated by maternal disease, fetal anomaly, or placental pathology. The discipline encompasses prenatal imaging and prognostication of structural fetal anomalies, the evolving field of fetal surgery, and the coordinated planning of delivery in complex cases. Research relevant to this area examines prenatal prognostication of congenital diaphragmatic hernia and the development of fetal surgical techniques, alongside maternal and fetal outcomes of cesarean delivery, abnormal placentation such as placenta percreta in a non-communicating uterine horn, and hematologic determinants including the hemoglobin thresholds associated with maternal and fetal risk. Intrapartum monitoring methods, fetal macrosomia, and rare maternal conditions complicating pregnancy further illustrate the scope. Preconception and antenatal care underpin risk reduction. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical studies, case reports, and reviews addressing high-risk obstetrics, prenatal diagnosis and prognostication, fetal intervention, placental and hematologic complications, and the maternal and fetal outcomes central to maternal-fetal medicine.
