Overview
Adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) is the domain of physical, emotional, and social well-being relating to the reproductive system and sexual development during the second decade of life, spanning the onset of puberty through the transition to adulthood. It encompasses pubertal maturation, menstrual health, knowledge of contraception and sexually transmitted infections, the prevention of unintended and early pregnancy, and the capacity to make informed, autonomous decisions free from coercion. Adolescence is a formative period in which biological maturation outpaces psychosocial readiness, leaving young people especially exposed to risks shaped by their information environment and social context. Research in this area examines the determinants of ASRH outcomes, including the central role of parent–adolescent communication, which is consistently associated with delayed sexual debut and improved protective behaviours, yet is frequently limited by cultural taboo, parental discomfort, and gaps in caregiver knowledge. School-based and community studies assess adolescents' knowledge of reproductive health, the conditions and structural factors that influence teenage pregnancy, and the legal and rights frameworks that govern access to confidential services. Effective intervention combines age-appropriate comprehensive education, accessible youth-friendly services, supportive family dialogue, and policy that affirms adolescents' reproductive rights, addressing the social, educational, and economic factors that condition behaviour rather than knowledge alone.
