Overview

Adolescent health concerns the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of young people during the transition from childhood to adulthood, a period defined by puberty, rapid growth, hormonal change, and emerging reproductive capacity. Within Women's Reproductive Health it addresses menarche and menstrual disorders such as premenstrual syndrome, nutrition and growth, sexual and reproductive knowledge, contraception, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and the social and educational factors that influence early pregnancy. Effective care emphasises age-appropriate education, communication, confidentiality, and equitable access to services. The research collected here reflects these priorities through studies of adolescent nutritional status and nutrition knowledge, sexuality education from the perspectives of teachers and students, parent-adolescent communication on sexual and reproductive matters, reproductive health service utilisation among rural adolescents, premenstrual syndrome among schoolgirls, and the experiences and outcomes of teenage pregnancy and early motherhood. Additional work examines adolescent attitudes toward HIV counselling and testing and the management of obesity and hypertension in young people. Together they span development, education, reproductive knowledge, service access, and risk across school and community populations. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the health, behaviours, and care of adolescents within reproductive medicine.
