Trauma and Women's Mental Health
Trauma is a major contributor to poor mental health among women. It can be caused by exposure to physical, sexual or psychological abuse, or by witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event such as natural disasters or war. Women who experience trauma are at an increased risk for psychological distress, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The impacts of trauma on mental health can have a substantial impact on a woman’s life, such as difficulties with relationships, work, and social functioning. Women may need a range of specialized support services to deal with the psychological impact of trauma, including counselling, psychotherapeutic interventions and social support. It is essential that women access help to cope with the effects of trauma and to prevent long-term negative mental health outcomes.
