Humanism

Humanism is an intellectual and ethical movement which values human dignity and emphasizes the capacity for self-determination and the power of rational thought. It originated in the Renaissance period in Europe, when scholars rediscovered the values of Greek and Roman philosophy and art. Humanism is often characterized by a focus on individual human achievement, intellectual curiosity and a spirit of critical inquiry. It is used today to describe a wide range of philosophical, political and social movements, from the Arts & Crafts Movement to secularism and the Human Rights Movement. Humanist views are also influential in numerous areas of contemporary life, from education and healthcare to scientific and technological research. In addition to its many practical applications in our lives, Humanism offers a powerful and inspiring vision of the potential for humans to realize their highest aspirations.
