Policies and Practices for Adaptation to Weather and Climate Extremes
Adaptation to extreme weather and climate events is the practice of preparing and responding to the impacts of events such as hurricanes, floods, droughts, heatwaves, and extreme cold. Policies and practices for adaptation are critical for reducing the risk of harm resulting from extreme weather and climate events, as well as bringing benefits such as increased resilience and improved economic performance. Practices can include strengthening physical infrastructure, developing better risk management systems and insurance, and enhancing capacity of vulnerable populations to prepare for, respond to, and recover from extreme events. Effective adaptation policies and practices can help communities achieve better outcomes in the face of extreme weather and climate events, and thus lead to more sustainable development for the long-term.
