Overview

The ozone layer is a region of the Earth's atmosphere that is located 10 to 30 kilometers (6 to 19 miles) above the Earth's surface and consists of ozone molecules. It is a naturally occurring, protective layer of gas that is vital to life as it filters out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, which can cause sunburn, skin cancer, cataracts, and other health problems. Ozone layer depletion is a result of human activities, such as the release of certain gases from factories, power plants, and cars. To protect the ozone layer, international agreements have been made with the aim of reducing these gases and other substances that have an adverse effect on the ozone layer.
