Overview
Oceanography is the study of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of Earth's oceans. It encompasses a wide variety of topics, from the exploration of deep-sea trenches to the mapping of ocean circulation patterns and the identification of oceanic species. Oceanography has played an important role in aiding climate change research, helping us understand how changes in atmospheric conditions are influencing oceanic circulation and temperatures. Oceanography has also been used to track hurricanes, understand coral reefs and their importance to marine ecosystems, monitor ocean health, and detect oceanic pollutants. Along with its significant scientific, environmental, and economic impacts, oceanography has also provided an array of recreational and commercial opportunities, such as fishing and boating, and has played an important role in naval and military operations.
