Limnology

Limnology is the scientific study of inland water bodies such as lakes, reservoirs, rivers and wetlands. It focuses on chemical, physical and biological processes that occur within these water bodies, as well as their interactions with the surrounding environment. Limnology has many practical applications, from monitoring water quality and predicting algal blooms to managing lake resources for recreational and commercial use. Understanding the processes of limnology also helps us to better protect inland waters from human-caused pollution, climate change and other threats. As an interdisciplinary science, limnology provides insight into many aspects of freshwater ecosystems and is an important tool in the conservation of these habitats.
