Overview

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the inner lining of the large intestine, causing continuous inflammation and ulceration that typically begins in the rectum and can extend through the colon. It is characterized by episodes of relapse and remission, with symptoms during active disease that commonly include bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, urgency, and fatigue. The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is thought to arise from an inappropriate immune response in genetically susceptible individuals, influenced by environmental and microbial factors. Although there is no known cure, treatment aims to control inflammation, induce and maintain remission, and reduce the risk of complications, which can include severe flares and an increased long-term risk of colorectal cancer. Management ranges from anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating medications to surgery in severe cases. International work on ulcerative colitis is closely tied to the broader study of inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease. The journal Ulcers publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to ulcerative and inflammatory gastrointestinal conditions, including a study evaluating a test formulation in a TNBS-induced model of ulcerative colitis, work on therapy adjuvants for inflammatory bowel disease, imaging in Crohn's disease, and the psychological aspects of colonoscopy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This page gathers open-access research relevant to ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel disease.
