Overview

Histology is the study of the microscopic structure of cells, tissues, and organs, linking anatomical organization to physiological and pathological function. It relies on tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning, and staining, followed by light- or electron-microscopic examination, and extends into histomorphometry, the quantitative measurement of tissue components. As a diagnostic and investigative discipline, histology underpins surgical pathology and a wide range of experimental research. The literature in this area applies histological and histomorphometric analysis to evaluate tumours such as primary breast sarcoma, to assess dental implant osseointegration after years in function, and to monitor mast-cell populations in models of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia. It is equally central to toxicology and experimental pharmacology, where tissue architecture reveals the effects of botanical extracts on the gastrointestinal tract or the impact of compounds such as aluminium sulphate on endocrine organs including the adrenal gland, and characterizes acute and subacute toxicity in rodent models. Histological findings also document tissue responses in severe dermatological conditions managed with reconstructive approaches such as amniotic membrane. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research employing histological and histomorphometric methods across pathology, regenerative medicine, and toxicology. Histology matters because direct visualization of tissue structure provides definitive evidence of disease, treatment response, and biological effect that gross or biochemical data alone cannot supply.
