Overview

Micro environments are pockets of land or water that are on a smaller scale than normal ecosystems. Often they are isolated, or have limited species due to their size. These ecosystems can be studied to understand the processes that occur in a given environment, as well as to provide insight into how an ecosystem can regenerate and recover from potential damage or disturbance. Micro environments typically contain a diverse range of organisms, and as such, they are excellent models for conservation studies, since they can be used to conserve or restore endangered species, while also helping to maintain the biodiversity of a larger ecosystem. The study of micro environments can also be used to assess how different land use activities may affect the health of a larger area, to identify potential sources of pollution and to promote sustainable development.
