Autolysis
Autolysis, also known as self-digestion, is a process in which cells break down into smaller components, such as enzymes and other proteins, due to the action of their own enzymes within them. This process is essential for all living organisms, in order to ensure that the cells in the body are able to function and grow properly. Autolysis can occur naturally in the body due to injury or illness, or can be used while performing certain laboratory techniques such as cell culture or tissue homogenization. Autolysis can also be induced artificially and has been used to study the internal structure and functioning of cells, as well as to study and identify the enzymes and other proteins contained within them. Autolysis is also used in creating and purifying biotechnological products, such as enzymes, hormones, and other biomolecules.
