Apolipoproteins

Apolipoproteins are proteins that bind to lipids (fatty molecules such as cholesterol) and form lipoproteins. They serve an important role in the transport of cholesterol, fatty acids and other hydrophobic molecules in the body. Apolipoproteins also play a role in the regulation of gene expression and the functioning of the immune system. This makes them vital for a healthy metabolism and proper functioning of the cardiovascular system. Apolipoproteins are also important in diagnosing certain diseases as their levels can be tested in the serum (blood). Abnormal levels of apolipoproteins can be associated with cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia.
