Overview
The thyroid is an endocrine gland in the neck that produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which regulate metabolism, energy use, body temperature, and protein synthesis, as well as calcitonin involved in calcium balance. Its hormone output is controlled by thyroid-stimulating hormone from the pituitary gland, and because these hormones act throughout the body, thyroid dysfunction can affect cardiovascular, neurological, and reproductive systems. Disorders of the thyroid range from underactivity and overactivity to benign nodules and malignant tumours that require dedicated diagnosis and management. In oncology the thyroid is significant chiefly as a site of cancer, and management depends on accurate molecular and histological characterisation. Key aspects include hormone regulation, diagnostic evaluation of nodules, and the classification and treatment of thyroid malignancies. Research published in this journal addresses molecular diagnosis in the clinical management of Thyroid Cancer, transcription-factor signalling in tumour cell proliferation, trends in thyroidectomy, outcomes of well-differentiated and medullary thyroid cancers treated with surgery and radioactive iodine, image-guided ablation, and rare neoplasms such as leiomyosarcoma and metastatic tumours of the thyroid, reflecting an emphasis on the gland's role in cancer biology, diagnosis, and long-term clinical outcomes.
