Medullary Thyroid Cancer
Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare type of cancer that develops in the C-cells of the thyroid gland. The C-cells are responsible for the production of a hormone called calcitonin which helps regulate calcium levels in the body. While MTC often does not cause any symptoms in the early stages, it can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. Treatment for MTC usually involves surgery to remove the thyroid gland and/or chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and/or targeted therapy. While MTC has a poor prognosis in advanced stages, early diagnosis and treatment can improve the chances for survival and cure.
