Overview
Exercise and physical activity refer to bodily movement produced by skeletal muscle that expends energy, with "physical activity" encompassing all such movement and "exercise" denoting planned, structured, repetitive activity undertaken to improve or maintain fitness. Together they influence cardiovascular, metabolic, musculoskeletal, and mental health, and are central to the prevention and management of chronic disease. Physiologically, regular activity improves cardiorespiratory capacity, insulin sensitivity, body composition, and musculoskeletal strength, while also affecting sleep, mood, and stress regulation. Research in Sports and Exercise Medicine examines the dose, type, and context of activity needed to achieve health benefits, including the effects of physical activity on sleep across adolescents and adults, the role of exercise in managing hypertension and cardiovascular risk, and behavioral approaches to overweight and obesity. It also addresses exercise physiology and biomechanics, such as lower-limb and hip kinematics during landing tasks in young athletes and injury-prevention programs, and the application of monitoring technologies, including continuous glucose monitoring in elite sport. Related work connects activity with nutrition, adipose tissue physiology, and population health knowledge and practices. Across these areas, the study of exercise and physical activity integrates physiology, behavior, and clinical evidence to inform recommendations that promote health, performance, and the prevention of disease.
