Overview

Cardiovascular health describes the integrated functional state of the heart and circulatory system, including the myocardium, blood vessels, and the regulation of blood pressure, lipid metabolism, and vascular function. It is determined by a combination of modifiable behaviors and physiological risk factors, and its maintenance reduces the likelihood of major adverse outcomes such as myocardial infarction, stroke, hypertension, and heart failure. Central to cardiovascular health is the management of established risk factors, including blood pressure, lipids, glycemic control, body weight, and inflammation, alongside lifestyle determinants such as diet, physical activity, and avoidance of tobacco. Research in this area examines knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding cardiovascular disease in different populations, the influence of healthy lifestyle behaviors and their variation across demographic groups, and the role of nutrition and culturally tailored interventions in reducing cardio-metabolic risk. It also addresses the interaction of cardiovascular risk with diabetes and metabolic syndrome, the contribution of oxidative stress and biological aging to vascular health, functional foods and nutraceuticals, and psychosocial factors such as depressive symptoms that mediate disease and self-care. Broader environmental influences, including climate change and extreme events, are increasingly recognized. Promoting cardiovascular health thus combines individual behavior change, risk-factor control, and population-level strategies to preserve circulatory function across the lifespan.
