Overview
Aerobic exercise is sustained physical activity that increases the body's demand for oxygen and elevates heart and breathing rates, including activities such as walking, running, cycling, swimming, and dancing. By repeatedly working large muscle groups, aerobic exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, improves the body's ability to take up and use oxygen, and enhances cardiovascular fitness and endurance. It is widely recognized for benefits that include better cardiovascular and metabolic health, weight management, improved mood and sleep, and reduced risk of chronic disease, and it forms a cornerstone of exercise prescription in Sports and Exercise Medicine. Research published by the journal examines the physiological and cognitive effects of aerobic and other forms of exercise. Work includes a study of the short-term and chronic effects of aerobic and resistance exercise on sleep in young men, and an investigation of the effects of combined cognitive and aerobic training on working memory and executive function in aging, highlighting links between aerobic activity and brain health. Additional research has reviewed the effects of physical activity on sleep across adolescents and adults. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to aerobic exercise and its impact on cardiovascular, metabolic, cognitive, and overall health.
