Overview

Pathology is the medical science concerned with the causes, mechanisms, and structural and functional manifestations of disease. It bridges basic science and clinical practice, providing the diagnostic foundation through examination of tissues, cells, and bodily fluids, and it classifies diseases, grades and stages them, and elucidates how pathological processes disrupt normal function. Subdisciplines include anatomical and surgical pathology, histopathology and cytology, and clinicopathologic correlation, increasingly supported by immunohistochemistry, molecular techniques, and imaging biomarkers. Research in this area spans diverse organ systems and lesions: choroidal and retinal pathology in age-related macular degeneration, allergic pathology, the use of contemporary pathology techniques to distinguish second malignant neoplasms from metastasis, intramuscular fat deposition in osteoarthritis, granulomatous gastritis, splenic and hepatic pathology, and gastrointestinal manifestations of reflux disease. Studies also examine the pathogenesis and treatment of liver disease, thyroid and prostate lesions, and infection-related tissue changes, including cytokine profiles in animal models of mycobacterial disease. Because accurate characterization of disease underpins diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment selection, pathology integrates morphology with mechanism. Methods include biopsy analysis, clinicopathologic case series, and laboratory and immunological assays. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the pathology and pathogenesis of disease across multiple organ systems.
