Overview
Liver disease diagnosis is the systematic process of identifying hepatic dysfunction, determining its underlying cause, and assessing its severity so that appropriate management can begin. Diagnosis integrates clinical history and physical examination with laboratory and imaging findings. Biochemical liver function tests measure aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, albumin, and coagulation parameters, distinguishing hepatocellular injury from cholestatic patterns and gauging synthetic capacity. Serological and virological assays identify viral hepatitis, while imaging modalities such as ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging characterize parenchymal texture, focal lesions, biliary anatomy, and portal circulation. Liver biopsy and elastography contribute when fibrosis staging or histological confirmation is required. The work spanning this area reflects the breadth of conditions encountered: chronic liver disease characterized through retrospective hospital cohorts, infectious causes including hepatic tuberculosis presenting as a pseudotumor and chronic hepatitis B managed with antiviral therapy, and parasitic and space-occupying lesions affecting the liver and spleen. Accurate diagnosis differentiates among inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, vascular, and metabolic etiologies, recognizing that presentations frequently overlap and that early, etiology-specific identification materially influences treatment selection, complication prevention, and prognosis across acute and chronic hepatobiliary disease.
