Overview

Fatty liver disease is a condition characterised by the accumulation of excess fat within liver cells, which can provoke inflammation and progressive liver damage. It includes alcohol-related forms driven by excessive alcohol consumption and non-alcoholic forms associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic disturbance, and certain medications, and if untreated it can advance to steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. The topic is clinically significant because fatty liver disease is among the most common chronic liver conditions worldwide, often progresses silently, and is closely tied to metabolic and nutritional health, making early diagnosis and lifestyle intervention important. Research published in this area examines the epidemiology of chronic liver disease through retrospective hospital-based studies in Ethiopia, the genetics of hepatic steatosis, including single nucleotide polymorphisms linked to alimentary fatty liver disease and to treatment-associated steatosis in HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy, and biomarkers of liver injury and angiogenesis in hepatocellular carcinoma complicating hepatitis C. Nutritional and metabolic dimensions feature prominently, with studies on vitamin D deficiency in chronic liver disease, epigenetics and nutrition, the glycemic index of a liver nutritional supplement, probiotic anti-inflammatory activity in fermented foods, and thyroid hormone contributions in obesity. Additional work addresses non-invasive assessment of liver stiffness and molecular biology relevant to liver pathology, reflecting an integrative view of liver health.
