Overview
Diagnostic procedures are the tests, examinations, and investigations clinicians use to detect disease, establish its nature and extent, monitor its course, and guide treatment. They span a wide methodological range, from the clinical history and physical examination to laboratory analyses of blood, tissue, and other specimens; imaging modalities such as radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography, and cone-beam techniques; endoscopic and functional studies; and increasingly molecular and genetic testing. Molecular diagnostics identify disease-causing mutations and characterize inherited conditions, for example defining defects in coagulation-factor genes underlying bleeding disorders, while biomarker discovery, including circulating microRNAs and other molecular signatures, offers minimally invasive means of detecting disease and predicting outcome. Diagnostic procedures also underpin organized screening programs that aim to detect conditions such as colorectal cancer in asymptomatic populations, where the choice of test balances sensitivity, specificity, acceptability, and cost. Imaging procedures contribute both to diagnosis and to procedural planning, as in the comparison of cross-sectional and panoramic techniques before surgical interventions. Beyond technical performance, the value of any diagnostic procedure depends on its appropriate selection, the prevalence of the condition, and the consequences of true and false results, which together shape decisions and resource use. As technologies evolve, diagnostic procedures increasingly integrate laboratory, imaging, and computational approaches to deliver earlier, more precise, and more personalized identification of disease.
