Overview
Abdominal surgery comprises operative procedures performed within the abdominal cavity and on its wall, addressing the gastrointestinal tract, liver, spleen, gallbladder, and associated structures. It includes the removal of diseased organs, repair of hernias and abdominal-wall defects, treatment of obstruction, infection, and tumors, and reconstruction following injury or resection. Procedures may be carried out through open incisions or by minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, the latter offering reduced trauma and faster recovery, and they require careful perioperative management of anesthesia, fluids, and physiological monitoring. Outcomes depend on the underlying condition, the chosen approach, and the prevention of complications such as surgical-site infection, bleeding, and impaired healing. Advances in surgical technique, imaging, and perioperative care have broadened the scope and improved the safety of abdominal operations. Research relevant to this topic includes systematic review of restrictive versus liberal perioperative intravenous fluid use in major abdominal surgery, the evaluation of cardiorespiratory parameters in laparoscopic versus open procedures, the challenge of surgical-site infections, abdominal-wall reinforcement with synthetic mesh following flap harvesting in pelvic resections, the management of conditions such as superior mesenteric artery syndrome and gastrointestinal fistulas, splenectomy, and gallbladder and biliary surgery, reflecting the breadth of indications and techniques encompassed by surgery of the abdomen.
