Overview
Lower back pain is discomfort, stiffness, or pain affecting the lumbar region of the spine, ranging from a dull ache to sharp or disabling pain. It is one of the most common health complaints and a leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting people across age groups. Most cases are mechanical, arising from strain or injury to the muscles, ligaments, intervertebral discs, joints, or nerves of the lower back, though pain can also stem from degenerative changes, disc herniation, nerve compression, and other conditions. Symptoms may include localised pain, muscle spasm, reduced mobility, and, when nerves are involved, pain radiating into the legs. Management ranges from physical therapy, exercise, and medication to interventional procedures and, in selected cases, surgery, with treatment guided by the underlying cause and severity. Spine and Neuroscience covers disorders of the spine and nervous system and their treatment, including a report on the use of sacral injection drawn from clinical experience, an interventional approach relevant to managing low back and related regional pain. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to lower back pain, situating the topic within the journal's coverage of spinal and neurological conditions and the methods used to evaluate and treat them.
