Sleep Related Breathing Disorders
Sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) are a group of medical conditions that cause disruptions in breathing during sleep. These conditions can have a significant impact on one's quality of life, as they can lead to chronic fatigue, poor concentration, and memory problems. Common types of SRBD include obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA), and hypoventilation/hypoxemia. OSA is caused by the narrowing of the airway, leading to interruptions of breathing during sleep. CSA is caused by a lack of coordination between the muscles used for breathing, leading to a decreased breathing rate. Finally, hypoventilation/hypoxemia is caused by a lack of sufficient air entering the lungs, leading to low oxygen levels. Treatment of SRBD involves identifying the underlying cause in order to determine a course of action. Strategies may include lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss or avoiding alcohol before bed; and use of devices such as CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines. Early diagnosis and treatment can reduce the risk of complications and improve one's quality of life.
