Sleep Disorders in Children
Sleep Disorders in Children are conditions that affect the quality, quantity and timing of a child’s sleep. These disorders can cause fatigue, poor school performance, behavioral problems, mood disorders and even physical health issues. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the child’s health, functioning and development. Common sleep disorders in children include insomnia, sleep-wake cycle disturbances, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. Diagnosis is based on a comprehensive evaluation of history, physical exam and polysomnography study. Treatment for each disorder is tailored to the individual patient, and can include lifestyle changes, cognitive-behavioral therapy, medication, and in some cases, surgery.
