Rem Sleep Behavior Disorder
Rem Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by parasomnias, including physical acting out of dreams and/or violent, vocal outbursts during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. It may occur in both adults and children and can be caused by a variety of different medical conditions. RBD is associated with increased risk of developing a neurodegenerative disorder, most commonly Parkinson's disease or Lewy Body dementia. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying condition, including medications, lifestyle modification and psychotherapy, as well as positive airway pressure. Early diagnosis and treatment of RBD can help reduce the risk of developing long-term neurological damage.
