Overview

Skin cancer is a malignancy that originates in the cells of the skin and is the most common form of cancer in humans. It can develop anywhere on the body and includes melanoma, which arises from pigment-producing melanocytes, and the non-melanoma types such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. The leading cause is exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and other sources, and protective measures such as sun avoidance, sunscreen, and limiting ultraviolet exposure help reduce risk. Early detection and accurate diagnosis are central to effective treatment. Research in Skin Cancer Epidemiology spans the prevention, biology, and treatment of these tumors. Work modeling the pharmacodynamics of sunscreens evaluates their efficacy and the role of sun protection factor in lowering the risk of sunburn and melanoma, addressing prevention directly. Treatment-focused studies include blockade of the programmed cell death protein-1 pathway as a therapy for melanoma and a fractionated laser combined with topical imiquimod for actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma, while reconstructive work such as the bilobed flap addresses repair after tumor removal. A review of human papillomavirus in virus-induced carcinogenesis broadens the picture of how cancers arise. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access articles reflect the journal's coverage of skin-cancer prevention, diagnosis, and care.
